If you wish to be a reasonable bike rider then your commitment to other road users starts before you get yourself onto the bike. You should get yourself the correct bike insurance to cover you to ensure that you are covered against any financial losses that you may incur should you be unfortunate to be involved in an accident.
Make sure you read all the contents of your bike insurance and that the bike insurance you are buying covers you sufficiently. Some bike insurance does not cover the rider for all types of situation unlike a car insurance policy.
With bike insurance there are three types of bike insurance cover.
Liability is the first. This covers other people involved in any accident but this type of bike insurance does not cover the rider or the rider’s bike.
The next cover for bike insurance is known as collision damage cover. This covers any damage that is caused in the event of an accident but this bike insurance cover also covers damage to the rider’s bike. Try and find out from the insurance company how much this type of bike insurance will pay out if the bike is written off as sometimes the small print in most bike insurance policies will reduce the amount they pay in respect of the depreciation of the bike’s value.
The best, and obviously, the most expensive type of bike insurance is comprehensive cover. Like with car insurance, this level of bike insurance also covers the theft of the bike. However, bike insurance policies will not pay out if the bike is stolen with the keys still in the ignition. So make sure you get into the habit of taking your keys with you especially when getting fuel because if you don’t then you stand to lose your bike and then receive nothing off your bike insurance.
Most insurance is expensive and bike insurance is no different. Your bike insurance premium is based on many factors such as how long you have been riding for, the make and model of the bike, the engine capacity, your age, the mileage you expect to cover and even where you live affects the cost of your bike insurance.
You should always inform the insurance company who gives you your bike insurance if you make any alterations to your bike whether it is simply cosmetic or if it increases the bike’s performance. If you don’t then you are giving the bike insurance company an excuse not to pay out.
You can reduce the cost of your bike insurance by getting an alarm fitted; making sure the bike is garaged at night. This prevents vandalism and thus reducing the risk of you making a claim.
You can also reduce the cost of your bike insurance by paying in one go as opposed to monthly payments. Plus accepting a higher excess figure will bring the cost of your bike insurance down too.
